Right click on an open area of the taskbar, the grey bar at the bottom. One of the entries that pops up says toolbars. Click on it and you will have another set of entries drop down. Click on desktop, and you are done. If you later decide to remove it, just perform the actions again. Window key and D will minimize your windows, taking you to the desktop, the shortcut I describe will bring a pop-up of all the desktop items in a list, with no need to minimize open windows.

If you right click on the taskbar, go to properties, you should be able to select Show Quick Launch. If not, then

Browse for the Quick Launch icon or do a search. Mine is in the
C:\Documents and Settings\*\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Where you see the asterik in the path above, you'll need to replace that with your user folder name. I put an asterik there because it's the log on name of my computer. Anyways, when you get there, right click on the the Quick Launch icon and do a Send to > Create Desktop Shortcut
