i use tampax compaq....they are great, a plastic applicator with a rounded tip (which you want both of those for the most comfort) and they are small and then expand, which makes them easier to carry around. good luck....they are great!

If you are going to use tampons rather than other options such as menstrual cups, free-flow methods or sanitary pads then you should be as safe as possible, so saying that the best to use would be either organic tampons, sponge tampons or homemade tampons.
Commercial tampons such as Tampax not only have the risks associated with all tampons but additional risks due to the fact they are made from synthetic materials that results in higher level of bacterial growth. The way in which Tampax make their tampons is also another issue, because they cut the fleece into horizontal strips rather than cutting a length of fleece and rolling into a swiss roll shape it means more edges where fibre loss is more so than with other brands. This also means added risk of increased menstrual cramps as length-ways expanding tampons like Tampax can expand into the cervix causing pain.
Commercial tampon manufacturers unnecessarily treat the tampons with chemicals as part of their bleaching process; this means chemicals in the tampons that are going directly into a major orifice of your body where there is a direct route to the blood stream. These chemicals are a risk because they can cause irritation and allergic reaction; they also affect the normal vaginal pH that can knock healthy balance of flora in the vagina out leading to infections. Manufacturers are also protected by law so that they do not have to tell their customers how they make their tampons, and as such they do not tell customers what chemicals are used, previously they used methods that were harmful to health so it is likely they carry on using harmful means of bleaching.
Organic tampons are exactly the same as commercial tampons in that they are disposable, look and function the same way as commercial tampons; you can also buy them from a lot of stores where you'd normally buy commercial tampons or from health stores. The difference is however is that organic tampons are made from 100% organic cotton and they do not contain any chemicals or bleach making them safer and more environmentally friendly. http://www.natracare.com
Sponge tampons are tampons made from natural sponge, these are reusable so you use them for your period and then when they are full you remove and rinse before inserting again, they last for a few cycles, so they are much cheaper and more environmentally friendly than some other types of tampons. Of course because they are made from natural sponge they don't contain any nasty chemicals or synthetic materials, fibre loss is also not an issue with sponge tampons. http://www.jadeandpearl.com or http://www.lunapads.com
Homemade tampons are what they sound like, they are tampons you make at home, you do this by taking a sterile sheet or bandages and ripping off into strips the width you find appropriate, and then you roll, using longer strips the larger and more absorbent you want the tampon. You can then tie together or tie in a length to pull them out by, but not necessary. They can be reused or binned after use. Of course no chemicals or synthetics unless you specifically use them, it is also cheap and envirionmentally friendly.
Always use the lightest absorbency tampons you can for your flow at any given day, the higher the absorbency the higher the risks, always remember too that they should be changed every 4 hours, not worn when not menstruating and not worn at night.

Sweetie,i urge you to speak with your mother about this particular topic. It may seem a little embarassing or uncomfortable, but it really isnt as she is a woman and she has been there so she understands what you are going through. She can help you figure out which absorbancy is right for you and she can recommend and help you figure it out.She is a woman, she has been exactly in this position before,so never be afraid to speak to your mother. She has done everything you are going through before,so she totally understands. If you speak to her about this,it not only opens a door of communication about this topic, but about others as well.It will stay open throughout your teen years and even into your adulthood. It is nice to have someone to talk to,rather than depending on peers from school or even those on here, because some do not necessarily give accurate answers. When you are speaking to your mother about this sorts of situations and decisions you know for a fact that you are getting experienced accurate information.Good luck hun.Have a good night!

Start with the lightest flow ones. Don't leave it in over 4 hours! There's something called Toxic Shock Syndrome from tampons if not used properly. You should consult with an older female for details.

I found when I started to use tampons that the ones in the plastic case were the easiest to insert and comfortable.

I like playtex. When they absorb they get wider, not longer like Tampax does.
