Because HIV has no cure, Australia recognises the disease as a terminal illness that impairs your ability to work and maintain employment. So my question is this:
How does the USA financially support HIV+ people in finding accomodation, medical insurance, access to education and training opportunities? Can HIV+ people apply for ANY government assistance or are they left out in the cold?

The government does not support people with disabilities. You can qualify for Medicare disability but its a long process and usually takes hiring a lawyer to get approval. Then you are limited to income requirements. It still cost quite a bit to pay for your policy, and it isn't complete so most buy something to supplement it. The prescription plan although sold by private companies is set up with large gaps in coverage called the donut whole were you can literally be responsible for large amounts of your own prescription costs. State medicaid programs have been stripped by the republican government so those who can still qualify are limited to poverty level incomes and cannot own anything but a house in some states. In my state our rich republican governor threw most poor, sick and disabled people off the medicaid roles while using state money to build a baseball stadium in St. Louis.

In the US, the real resources for treatment of HIV/Aids are private charities who will pay insurance premiums and medicine costs. St. Louis Effort for Aids is one of the best and oldest. Its supported by the community and has saved the lives of thousands. We are also home to one of the HIV vaccine trails.

Otherwise, frankly in this country, hope that you die quickly.

Well, that just proves how stupid Australians are really.

You can live a happy healthy life with HIV for years and years and most people would rather do this than have hand-outs.

When the disease develops to full blown AIDS, it's a different matter. From working with a HIV and AIDS charity I can assure you that the US and UK offers a lot of support to people diagnosed with HIV which helps them lead as normal a life as possible.

If you have HIV or AIDS in America you get free medication as far as disability insurance goes I'm not sure if they take it that far because the cost of insurance in America is always on the rise.

Looks like we need a new president huh? Can't marry, have less rights, are secluded, it's amazing we're still allowed to have our Pride Parades.

That's terrific news...I don't know about the US and I am ashamed to say I no little about Canada...except that because we have a socialized medical plan people are looked after medically.

The United States doesn't know what a healthcare system looks like, and wouldn't even if one came up and bit them on the you know what. Thanks to GW and our ignorant conservative government, the mighty US of A would rather spend billions of dollars waging a useless war than spend money on solving problems like disease and poverty

Hi Ashley, can you please provide a link with this information? It would be useful to have more information about the Australian situation, for reference. This is the first I've heard of it and I would like to read more about it. Many thanks.
