My wife owes 6000 in hospital bills. She has no job (personal reasons) so therefore no insurance. I recieve social security and we live off of very little. Sometimes not enough for food and gas throughout the month without help. Well the hospital recently turned the bill over to a debt collection agency. They called and talked to me because my wife wasnt there and said somethin if we dont make a difinitave payment plan or something it will end up in justice court or somesuch. What can they do we dont have money to pay anything? Cant take blood from a turnip. Should i just change the number and hope they dont call?

I'm pretty sure they can't make you pay. Call your local assistance office and ask what you should do. Maybe they will be able to help or direct you to someone who can.
Best wishes, I hope it all works out for you.

Amazingly, you are getting threatened with something that is not true ESPECIALLY if it has been sold to a collection agency. These agencies bought that debt from the hospital for pennies on the dollar and now are trying to collect the full amount any way that they can. They will find you if you change numbers, it does not matter. But they will not take you out to court or anything like that. If you want to genuinely pay this off then you should use CCC (consumer credit counseling) or some other not for profit organization. But the collection agencies will threaten and harrass you b/c most people don't know what they are really allowed to do to you. Eventually your debr will be sold off again and again and eventually just written off. Your credit will definately be affected as well.

you are right -- you can't get blood from a turnip. debt collection agencies rely on calling your bluff and lying cheating and stealing to get money. there have even been numerous reports of debt collection agencies re-assigning other peoples debts to complete strangers. it is identity theft on corporate level and nobody seems to want to stop it. i don't think they can do much to you if neither of you are working they can't garnish wages. i think that is all they can do. they rely heavily on fear bating. if you end up in court then thats what happens but i don't think they can get anything from you if you have no income. I made a deal with one to pay like 100 a month and that even bit me on the butt because it was taken directly out of my account. NEVER give anyone personal account information was the lesson i learned there. I had to close that bank account and pay $$ to do it.

they can force you into bankruptcy here in australia if the debt is over $5000,,, but it is your best interests to write to them offering as much as you can with the reasons for the amount ie - on benefits... most businesses would rather collect their money than loose it but be aware this will ruin any credit rating you have....seek legal advice if you can ....
changing your number will only delay the inevitable in the long run...

Offer to pay them what you can afford, each month, for as long as it takes to pay off the debt. If you make an offer and agree to it, they will take it. So offer to pay it off $5 - $10 per month. They are very lenient in these situations. They will take any effort to pay consistently that you offer.

for sure they might deliver you to collections. they do no longer seem to be a credit card and you have no longer paid them. in case you do have a credit card, see in case you're able to do a money develop. it extremely is an city fantasy that the guy who owes could make any length money and that they might desire to settle for them.

Medical......is what I'm thinking...sounds like your income falls within the limits....otherwise there is nothing they can do...just your credit rating goes into the toilet.

If you don't have anything, they cannot get anything. If you have any collateral though, They will definitely be reaching for it.
