Uh, hard one. First off, you have to take into account the diversity of goth fashions. The more romantic looks come from an idealized version of middle ages through Victorian garb, while the cyber look is inspired by visions of a future distopia. The mainstream and original goth looks evolved from the post punk movement started in the later 70s and early 80s. Originally, goths wore black versions of what punks were wearing, plus lots of fishnets and black eyeliner. Gothic fashion icons like Siouxsie Sioux and Robert Smith (although he's not goth per say) helped solidify the new look, but the emerging of different musical movements within the gothic movement in the 80s expanded the gothic fashion choices. There are currently many different goth looks, all with their own history and meaning. Voltaire's book "What Is Goth?" does a decent version of showing all these different looks, but you have to keep in mind he's making fun of all of them.

The goths were a tribe from ancient Sweden which may help to explain with the place called Gotaland(an area of Sweden). So the word is Swedish, the goth's tribe were also around the same time as the saxons, and others. They were a Germanic tribe with the Swedish origin. They tried many of times to fight with the Roman empire and they were very powerful. They repeatedly attacked the Roman empire durring the gothic war of 375-382. The goths were invaded by the Huns (like Atilla). Most of them joined the Huns or were forced into the Roman empire to become part of them. Most of them were forcidly converted to Arian Christianity while in the empire. In the fifth and sixth centuries, the Goths separated into two tribes, the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. Both established powerful successor states of the Western Roman Empire. In Italy the Ostrogothic Kingdom established by Theodoric the Great was defeated by the forces of the Eastern Roman Empire after the Gothic war of 535–54. The fifth-century Visigothic Kingdom in Aquitaine was pushed to Hispania by the Franks in 507, converted to Catholicism by the late sixth century, and in the early eighth century fell to the Muslim Moors. While its influence continued to be felt in small ways in some west European states, the Gothic language and culture largely disappeared during the Middle Ages. In the 16th century a small remnant of a Gothic dialect was described as surviving in the Crimea. The Goths have had many names, possibly due to their population being composed of many separate ethnic groups. People known by similar names were key elements of Proto-Indo-European and later Germanic migrations. Nevertheless, they believed (as does the mainstream of scholarship)that the names derived from a single prehistoric ethnonym owned by a uniform culture in the middle 1st millennium BC, the original "Goths".

The punk look was started in London at Vivienne’s Seditionaries boutique. The punk look in London and the UK was much rougher than American punk, probably because it was derived in London. Punk was more of a way of life than a clothing line, so people had lots of piercings. People used safety pins to pierce their cheeks, ears, clothing, and other skin. Teens that went to a school with school uniforms often customized their uniforms by ripping them and decorating their schoolgirl skirts with safety pins. This look was worn with extreme Goth-y make-up.
