I am a 22 year old College Student finishing his Finance Degree in April. I have lived in Dearborn, neigboring Detroit, for the last 17 years of my life. I want to move there next summer. I have heard two things constantly about that place. First that crime is high. Now I don't know how bad that is, but it can't be as bad as Detroit. Second, is that Miami Beach is expensive. I have checked out the prices for the Alamac Apartments and it's about 1250 a month for a two bed/two bath apt. Split in half, it's not too shabby. I'm worried about the food and regular stuff. Are those expensive? How's the job market? I will have a BBA with four years of Accounting and Sales Experience. Will it be tough for me to find a job? Is Spanish really that necessary? I'm tolerant with people that can't speak English, since I'm an Arab-American and am a very open-minded individual. THANK YOU SO MUCH IF ANYBODY ANSWERS THIS FOR ME!!!

I'm 23, and I recently moved from Michigan (I lived in Sterling Heights) to the Miami area. I originally lived in Miami Beach and disliked it. Since then, I have moved to a nearby city (Sunny Isles Beach) and love it there. Believe me, Miami Beach could not be more different than Dearborn! It will take a lot of getting used to for you.
First of all, in Miami Beach, there is a lot of traffic. That gets old really fast! Also, you are near restaurants, bars, the beach, and many little shops. But the only grocery stores nearby are really small. You will have a long drive if you want to go to any larger stores, such as Wal-Mart or even the mall.
It is always loud as people are partying until 5 in the morning (That's when the bars close). I know where the Alamac is, and that is right in the center of everything. This is great if you want to party and have fun, but if you want to sleep or relax, it will get annoying.
Furthermore, Miami Beach is overpriced. In other areas, you can get better rentals for the same price. For example, I looked for one bedroom apartments/condos in Miami Beach for about $1300 a month. The units were all small with bad views. But in Sunny Isles Beach, for the same price you could get a much, much larger condo with ocean view.
Crime is not so bad. People say that about Miami Beach, but I have always felt safe there. I think it is only dangerous if you get yourself involved with drugs. Food at restaurants is expensive and bars are expensive, much more than the Detroit area. However, things at grocery stores seem about the same.
As far as the positives about Miami Beach. Lots of bars and clubs, a beautiful beach, and a lot of fun. You will never be bored and you can always walk back to your apartment when you get trashed at the club.
However, everyone I know who moved to Miami Beach from another state, moved to another nearby city within a year. Believe me, living in Miami Beach gets old.
I would recommend living on the beach, but somewhere else, more North, like Surfside, Sunny Isles Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood Beach, etc... It's much more calm and quiet up there. You might want to see where you can find a job before deciding where you want to live. Traffic in the whole area is terrible and during rush hour it can take a long time to get to work if you live far from it. Mapquest the directions and then double or triple the time it says it will take you to get there.
The job market is good. It is much easier to find a job than in Michigan. Spanish is certainly a plus, but I don't think it's necessary. I can't speak Spanish and I have been able to find jobs. Some jobs require you to be bi-lingual, especially those where you will be working with the public. But if you are working in a company, not dealing with local customers, usually English is enough. The area is majority Hispanic, but most everyone can speak English to at least some extent.
Lastly, let me just say I love Miami and you will too. The beaches are beautiful, the clubs are amazing, the weather is gorgeous! Whatever you decide, I can bet you will love it much more than Michigan. Good luck!

Living on MB is great if you WORK on MB! Then you won't have to fight the traffic. Most of the jobs on MB are retail or tourist related, so they don't pay much. The Alamac is right in the middle of the action. So if you want to play or tend bar or wait tables, you can walk to work & play. On the other hand it's noisy all day & nite -- if you actually want to sleep.
If you want to use your BBA, you'll probably work downtown or in one of the outlying office parks. In that case, commuting to & from the Beach will get really old really fast.
The crime stories are greatly exaggerated. Stay away from dope & criminal types & it's as safe safe as anywhere. Speaking Spanish is not important on the Beach, but will be a big help elsewhere. If you speak Arabic that will be a plus, too. We have a large Arab community spread out thru the county, but mostly in the near Southwest section (Miami, Coral Gables & Little Havana )
Sggestion: Come down; take a short term apartment; get a job first & then move to a convenient location.

I have been going to school in Tampa since 2001, and I grew up in Palm Beach County, so I am familiar with these areas somewhat. Orlando- I like this night life the best, better atmosphere than Tampa in my opinion. This is central Florida though so there is no beach. University of Central Florida is here so that makes it a college town, plus Disney land and all the theme parks draws tourists. A bustling city. Tampa- Cheap as well, has clearwater beach 45 mins away and St. Pete an hour away, Siesta key 1 hour and a half hours south. The night life in Tampa can be considered good, but I think it is kind of skeezy. I have been here since I was 18 and now I am 25. Tampa is more an industrial city; I'm actually not a huge fan. University of south Florida is here so there are lots of college students. Another good thing is the sports teams, we have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (football), Devil Rays (baseball), Tampa Bay Lightning (hockey) , USF Football the bulls, Tampa bay storm (arena football). Also, there is a Busch Gardens and Adventure Island, but I like the Disney parks better. Miami- nice, but in a stuck up way at times. Lots of spanish people, artsy, also lots of gay people. Beautiful beaches, but Miami is probably the most expensive of these cities and maybe even the most dangerous. There are Universities down there as well, but more expensive. More traffic in Orlando and Miami than Tampa. I grew up in the Jupiter/ Palm Beach Gardens Area. This area is real nice!! I'm planning on moving back there in 6 months. Kind of expensive but great beaches, laid back area.

I love Miami,Miami Beach (South Florida in general)...FIRST OFF crime is high but mainly stupid tourist that come just for trouble and natives trying to target tourist drugs is also a big problem their are some part around Miami/Miami Beach that are bad mainly drugs ...SECOND...Miami Beach is a little expensive depending where you want to live near the beach very expensive but other areas inland not that expensive (apartments.com) in Miami Beach restaurants it is expensive but Miami /Miami Beach have tons of little Latin American cafes that are cheap,also all you can eat buffets....Iam not to sure about accounting and all that however good news is Downtown Miami is very close to Miami Beach so you should find a job their (careerbuilder.com/nbc6.net its a local news channel with links to jobs in Miami/Miami Beach)...Downtown is Miami financial center....As far as Spanish yes you will need to learn but if you're open minded person you'll learn fast...Spanish is a must...Miami is the best the weather the beautiful people the beaches...You'll love it good luck....Consider other great places around or close to Miami Beach like North Miami Beach,Downtown Miami,Aventura,Hallandale,Pembroke Pines,Miami Lakes...Hope this helps

Parking can be a pain in the #$@#$!! Other than that you should be ok. I'll let the others comment on Spanish. I don't speak it, but my job doesn't require it. Though, it could be very important in sales or in any customer service position.
