I am starting to think all the holidays were made up by greeting card people that's how they make their money ....it is all so commercial these days , the toy makers, clothing factories etc. Where has the true meaning gone?

There actually was a St. Valentine, and St. Valentine's day is actually a saints day - a religious holiday. The modern Valentines Day actually has very little, if anything, to do with St. Valentine though, so I suppose today's Valentine's day is pretty much a gimmick.

No St. Valentine was a real guy but card companies probably exaggerate a little so they can sell more. ( but it is a holiday of affection and passion)

Valentine's day was originally to honor the sheep herders, Saint Valentine was one of them.

I have no idea how it got turned around like it did, but I remember reading a kid's book that explained it once.

actually it was started by a woman in my hometown of Worcester,Ma..we used to learn that stuff in elementary school ..and Clara Barton who lived 2 towns aways (like 10 minutes from here)...but for the life of me I can't remember the details nor her name...but it went something like this....she had a love and wrote out her feelings like on a brown lunch bag or something ( I think is was the late 1800s.)...and then she did it on paper and people liked the idea and then you see the rest of the story nowadays

Some would also cynically state that the candy company had a hand it in as well.

i mean, nothing between christmas and Easter?
