They are called mp3 players because you load music files into them with an ".mp3" suffix in the file name. So you first have to get music files on your hard drive with the ".mp3" suffix. You can use music from a CD or download files from the internet. A good place to start is www.emusic.com because they allow you 25 free downloads and guarantee their files will play on all players. Once you get the files on your hard drive, click START, then My Computer. Your mp3 player has a detachable part which will expose the USB-2 plug. Plug your mp3 player into a USB port and watch the monitor screen to see which new device appears. Now use your mouse to find the hard drive (usually Drive C). Right Click on Drive C and select Explore. That will show you where the mp3 files are listed. There will be two columns on your screen. File names are listed on the right side. Devices (such as Drive C, Portable Drive G, etc.) are listed in the left column. You may have to use your mouse again so your Portable Drive (mp3 player) comes into view. You are finally ready to "load" songs into the mp3 player. Locate the song you want, left click on it and hold down the button while dragging the pointer from the song title to your mp3 player name. Release the button and the song will be stored on your mp3 player. It is easier to do than it sounds like. Just keep "dragging" more songs to your mp3 player until you are finished. All players have a storage limit --- such as 128 Mbytes, 256 Mbytes, etc. So you can load only so many songs into your player. But if you try to load more songs than it will hold, the screen will tell you when it is full. This next step is IMPORTANT! When you have finished loading songs into your player, close My Computer window and move the pointer toward the right end of the tool bar at the bottom of the screen. One of the icons is called "remove device safely". Click on that icon and select the letter associated with your mp3 player on the My Computer screen--- like G or J or whatever. Click on the proper letter and your screen will tell you it is now safe to remove your mp3 player from the USB socket. Unplug your player and listen to the music.

well first, you need songs on your computer.. either from cds or downloading them. Next you connect a usb cable from your computer to the mp3 player. Some mp3 players use a certain program.. like the ipod uses itunes, but other you can directly drag and drop files into the file folder (it should appear as a removable drive under my computer)

after that they are ready to be listened to :)
