You write the essay according to your perspective, ie what you think. By using "I" in your essay, it attaches more to your opinion and view rather than others. Second person uses "you" and third-person uses him/her.

A first person essay is an essay which represents a point from a personal point of view. Instead of using third person pronouns such as he or she, this type of essay tends to use words such as me and I. This is seldom used in society today, but it is a method which is favorable among teachers and students today.

Hope this helps!

First-person is from your point-of view, so for instance, instead of saying, "He saw a bird", you would write "I saw a bird". Make sense?
