I have a USB hard drive which works perfectly well in XP (just literally plug and play, and it's on My Computer, which I access like a normal drive).

I have another computer with ME, but I can't find the USB hard drive on the my computer section. Any ideas why, or what I might need to do to get the USB Hard drive working in both ME and XP?

Thanks a lot guys.

Remember pal that when ME was made USB Hard drives werent out then, so there is no driver for it in ME.
But one thing you can do is to install the driver from the CD, if the harddrive comes with one. But if it doesnt, check the Hard drive for its manufacturer, and visit their website, they always have their drivers uploaded on their site, so guys like you can do backward compability with older version of Operating systems. If no manufacturer found r no website. Try searching the web for a USB Hard disk driver especially Microsoft's site or seagate.com

I can think of two scenario to check.

First is to enable the USB in BIOS. It may not have been automatically enabled, or it may have been disabled.

If this is not the problem.

Does your computer have USB 1.1 or 2.0? When Windows ME (I'm sorry) came out, most PC's had USB 1.1. The USB hard drives are usually USB 2.0. If your PC has only 1.1, you will need to get a PCI USB card to use with the USB hard drive.

I don't know about Windows ME, but in XP if you find the driver for your hard drive on the web, you can install it through the device manager after going through the "adding new hardware" procedure... hope this helps a little....
