im thinking 5 days 4 nights is long enough to cover all the places. my girlfriend thinks one week is.

It completely depends on what you want to do, and what other parts of the island you want to explore. I stayed in Kuta for 3 days and we went as far north as Ubud and Den Pasar. We saw a few too many temples, but we didn't get to a lot of the musems and shops that we wanted to. If I were to go again I would split a week, 1/2 in Kuta and 1/2 in Denpasar or Ubud. We stayed at the Hard Rock, and they have a wonderful pool/outside bar and dining area that was wonderful to enjoy in the evening. Here's a link to our trip itinerary.

If you just wanna visit all places but not stay long on the spot then maybe 5 days 4 nights is enough..
But if it's your first time to bali and you like beaches and culture, why you don't stay there for one week or more..
There are many great places out there and you will never get bored once you arrived in Bali..

been there two times, need 3 or 4 days to unwind and 4 days to relax. JayaKarta Hotel is an OK place to stay at Legian, can walk along the beach to Kuta.
