The nastiness sure comes out at election time doesn't it. Be it among the polititians everywhere or the voters as here at this site. I'm really hoping in 2008 that be it McCain, Frist or Obama, Republican, Libertarian or Democrat, whomever, that the number one goal will be unity in this country. It seems to have been a long, long time.

20 years of decline does that.

The last time people believed in the president was when Reagan was president. That was a while ago, and probably a lot of the people on here don't remember those times. He was a Republican, but he had a lot of Democrat support too. They called themselves Reagan Democrats. It didn't mean they supported him on everything or that they were Republicans, it was that they found enough common ground to respect him and to support him. Reagan was president when the cold war ended by a strong america, a united america.

We cannot have unity with the angry and unhinged far left. They have the old media slamming their talking points all over the place. There are a bunch of people who believe that crap.

As for McCain, he has ZERO chance. He is hated by the Republican base, and he needs it to win. He is a phony and a fake Republican who only serves himself.

How can we have unity when you have one party who wants to seize wealth in the form of taxes and create more and more government? At the same time, you have people like me who work their tail off creating a business, and all this country wants to do is steal it from me? I will fight to death if I have to to defend myself and property. I am so sick of it.

I'm with you. The tone of civil discourse and the resulting insults is way out of control.

However, I don't believe this is anything new. The thing that strikes me is the media available to spout venom and rhetoric.

I think the answer is simple:

DON'T REELECT ANYONE!

I am convinced that the founding fathers intended the congress to be a true civil service. A man would leave his business to work in congress for a term, maybe two, then return to private life. All these politicians making careers out of political elections are ruining the process.

We have ourselves to blame, because we keep electing these same folks, and we refuse to demand term limits.

If pro is the opposite of con, what's the opposite of progress?

Unity is a pipe dream in every country. The best way to win an election is to call the other person names and make him look like an idiot.

I kind of agree with you
in a matter of fact, i agree with you entirely
i think that everyone else who's blind thinks that its the only way to get a good president or something
if we had more unity, it would be like the 60s with Martin Luther King Junior, someone who will be remembered forever

Complete unity is an idealistic dream. It is not realistic, and it will never happen, except for one eventuality still worse than disunity: full scale war - such as World War Two.

Dissent is good and healthy. What we need is far more civility.

McCain is soft on terrorists, Frist retired, and Obama has no stance on anything. They would not unite, but widen the rift

The US has never been united and we've done just fine. Adams called Jefferson in a "whore-master" and we've been running full steam ever since.
