I assume that you are refering to an anti-virus program or something like that. A small icon down by the clock should give you SOME indication. You can also open the Secutity Center control panel. This will tell you if your firewall/antivirus/updates are all running as they should.
If you dont even have this control panel, go immediately to Start Menu > All Programs > Windows Update and do whatever Microsoft tells you to do. Start with the critical updates. Plan on spending an hour or two updating. WHEN DONE; go to Avast (link below) and download their free home antivirus, and run it. Your computer will restart and will be scanned.

First go to Start, Control Panel and Click on Windows Firewall. Make sure it is turned on. And check all your anti-virus and anti-spyware and mark the setting for continually on. Different with all, and some free packages don't do continual watching. AVG is good and CyberDefender ($) and Ad-Aware (free)

It pretty much depends on what 'brand' of security you are using. Most brands will put an icon in your systray (next to clock) that you can click and see the status.

go to http://www.grc.com they have a online port scanner that will test to make sure you firewall is working properly
For a virus scanner do a search for virus scanner test file or something like that and see if you can find a test file to download which should trigger your virus scanner.
