No tipping is not required.
But in Japan there is a thing called "Keep the change".
Rarely people do this but I've seen it done and had people do it to me as well when I was working part time.
I guess the circumstances will vary but if say for example, you are rushing to get some place and the cab driver does a good job at avoiding traffic and running a few red lights to get you there on time then you can give some extra money and tell him,
"Tsuri wa iranai yo!" or "Keep the change!"
It's not required and not everyone does this but it's a little something you can do to show you appreciate the extra service they provided. Although I think compared to the US the regular service that they give you in Japan is "extra" enough.
So be careful not to give the "change" just because you think they served you well or treated you with extra care. You might end up doing it everywhere you go in Japan!!

I knew that tipping was not a custom here 3 years ago when I arrived. However after I found a local Bar I liked I tried to leave a tip on the table when I left. The waitress ran into the street after me to tell and give me the 500 yen I left on the table. Someone told that to give a TIP here has a negative meaning kinda like your saying here..you need this more then me...I'm rich and can afford to give it you because you obviously need it if your doing this type of work. I don't really know how true that is but as I said thats the way it was explained to me.

not at all. It could be considered an insult or message that you want better service next time. If you wanna show appreciation, just tell them everything was great and you liked it. That will go far with the bar staff.
If you frequent the place all the time, they will rememebr you and really warm up.

No, they're expensive enough as it is. There's not really any tipping anywhere in Japan.
