If i found a phone i reported as lost or stolen, can i reactivate it?

Almost a year ago, I lost my cell phone, and had the insurence replace it, which required filing a police report, and now, almost a year later, I found the old phone. If I give the old phone to a friend, and have him activate it on his plan, could he or I get in any trouble?
The service is Verizon, and the insurence is their standard one.

You might want to tell verizon you found the phone or you're friend might be accused of stealing it.
