I'm not sure about New Guinea, but I (female American) buy gifts for my husband quite frequently. He has a very physically demanding job and sometimes works 70+ hours a week (almost double what I work). And so if I see a dvd or book he would like, I like to buy them to show him that I'm thinking of him. It's harder to show appreciation in other ways such as cooking a nice meal or having the house spotless because normally he beats me home in the evenings because I pick up our daughter and run errands. But for my daughter, I don't buy gifts that often. Only special occasions, because we don't want to spoil her. We've actually talk about limiting her Christmas gifts down to 3 gifts a year (which compared to some is just being too strict) because last year (her 1st Christmas), she just got way too much and doesn't play with a lot of it-I'm sure there are plenty of other kids out there who would enjoy them more than she does. (Sorry this got so lengthy).

I would really doubt that you would see the preeminent Papua New Guinea gift given or received from one American to, or from, another American, The New Guinea gift is usually a live Pig and it is also their main compensation given when a crime has taken place.
Remember, the Nationals of PNG have an yearly income of hard money that is on a par with the bi-weekly salary of a middle-class American.
