The atempted secession of the South from the Union was the basis for it; slavery was a minor issue really. Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Harriet Tubman, and many others were involved in it on many levels.

It was north vs south, but dont picture rich plantation owners marching off to war. It was mostly the poor and the slaves themselves who fought for the interests of the rich white people.
