Hi, I just recently bought an american girl doll. I got it off ebay so its not a brand new one. Its in good condition except for the hair the ends are really dry. Is there anything I could use to make it better, can I actually wash the hair like normal hair.

You can wash the hair with shampoo and condition it with either regular conditioner or fabric softener. Let the conditioner sit in the hair awhile and comb it thru while it's still in. Then gently rinse it out. You can also use detangler made for human hair.

Well, if you are going to Chicago anytime soon, go to the American Girl store. There is an actual hair salon for the dolls. Or, if you don't want to travel, try using a tiny bit of conditioner on the ends. You could also send your doll into the American Girl Doll Hospital. I know they re-attach arms and other body parts but they might be able to replace the head of the doll which means getting a new head of hair as well. I don't know how much that would cost but if you really care about your doll, you should do something about it. One last thing, you could also find a smaller doll hospital in your area that might be able to do the same thing as the American Girl Doll Hospital.

P.S. I use to play with American Girl dolls when I was younger, too.

American Dolls hair is often similar to Caucasian hair. Find a person whose hair you like and ask what they use to keep their ends healthy and avoid dry hair. Then buy the sample size in a local discount chain

The doll hospital is also a great resource if they have someone one site who is an expert.

You can also call American Girl or do a live chat during normal business hours if i remember right i did this for Mattel and they are now under the same umbrella with Barbie :-)

Get plastic curlers or something. Don't use heat. When I was 10 I tried to straighten my dolls hair and it ended up falling off.

I'm not sure that it would actually hurt the doll to wash the hair but these two links may help....
