$30 for a pair of earhphones may be worth looking in to. If you have access to a OHM meter you can at least test them. The trouble may not be them, but the jack in the ipod. That is the more common fault. Ok, how do we test them? Set the meter on the lowest scale. Tough both probes together and see that the meter reads "0". Then touch the black lead to the barrel of the head set plug and the red lead to the tip and then the ring of the plug. A general guess for that type of headset would be a reading of about 16 to 32 Ohms. If one or both give no reading, then the headsets are the problem. As above though, it is more apt they will test good and the fault is with the ipod. For some reason (like they get dropped a lot) a lot of ipods have a problem with the ground connection at the headset jack, it gets cracked from the ground land around the circuit board. If you can get it apart you can re-solder the connection.

Bend the wire very hard near the earcups and when you can hear from it again tape it. I have the same problem but it works now since I've done that.
