Ok well, "Buttering your bagel" is a euphemism for female masturbation but when someone says "buttering both sides of your bagel" it means that the person they are speaking to is a bisexual who regularly has both hedero and homosexual relations. I've actually had this said to me before. It's commonly used when someone does something that people interpret as "Gay" even though they are completly hedero. Someone will jokingly say-- "I didn't you know he/she buttered both sides of the bagel!" *insert laughter* Oh and bagel is interchangable with bread. Doesn't matter which one you use.

I was told that buttering your bagel means having sex, so buttering both sides....you can figure it out.

It means you're overwhelming yourself. The phrase doesn't necessarily pertain to sex or relationships. It's a figure of speech that means the same thing like "Lighting your Candle at both ends" or "Biting off more than you can chew".

I've always heard it as "you are buttering both sides of your bread" which means you are trying to have it both ways. Sexually, it can mean someone who has sex with both women and men.

Its a derogatory reference to bisexuality. To both straight and gay people, bisexuality is view often as a threat and fence sitting.

Intolerance is not just limited to homophobes.
