my daughter did the same thing and what i did with her is everytime she put her thumb in her mouth I would take it out and tell her no. I would try to be very consistent with it and try to keep and eye out for it. Thank God it worked.
Trust me if you don't want your child to continue sucking his thumb then try and stop it from now.
You could also try giving him a pacifier or a security blanket to hold.
Good Luck

The only suggestion I can give you is to give your baby a nuk, or pacifier. My daughter sucked her thumb and wouldn't take a nuk but I kept trying and now she does. I know it will be hard to get her off the nuk but it will be easier than her thumb. You can't throw away the thumb right? LOL Plus nookies don't cause the same amount of dental problems that thumb sucking does, or so I've heard. If you are against a nookie maybe you can try those hand mittens they use on newborns to keep them from scratching their faces. Hope I helped and good luck.

His thumb is attatched so there is no way to get rid of it. If you want him to stop sucking his thumb you will have to wait a while until he is old enought to self soothe without the thumb. Usually around 1 yr to 1 and a half. Good luck and remember, this too will pass. Good luck

My baby started sucking his thumb at 2 months. We tried to give him a pacifier, since those can eventually be thrown away, but he never liked it. I asked two pediatricians and they both said that I should let him because it is the way he soothes himself.

Getting rid of the thumb wouldn't be a good idea...he will need it to pick things up later in life. Seriously...why does it matter so much? It will not ruin his teeth or anything. Let him be...he is happy.

Give him a pacifier if it bothers you. I didn't want a thumb sucker and thought a pacifier could be kept cleaner.
Also, my 5 month old has taken recently to chewing on a burp cloth. He actually loves those things and pulls them over his head when he wants to go to sleep. So precious.
The problem is he's starting to teeth. That's why he's sucking on anything he can get in his mouth. Also, you can get toys he can bite on that will help.

Let him soothe himself. Even fetuses in utero suck their thumbs. it is a natural human reaction to stress. unless you are willing to meet all is suckiing needs at your breast, which is ideal, you need to let him comfort himself. There is nothing wrong with it. If you don't make a big deal out of it he will stop in a few months or a year or so.

Try giving him a pacifier, when he puts his thumb in his mouth. He may be wanting to suck because he's getting tired, so lay him down with the paci.

You can try giving him a pacifier as a lesser-of-evils. You can get rid of it later on, but you can't take his thumb away. He might resist the plug, so try a few different shapes.

Let him suck. There may be a reason behind it. The baby will grow up, and I doubt if it will continue into grammar school. Kids are not very tolerant of others. Check with your Doctor too.
