On mammals, to nurse their offspring. The mammary glands producing the milk can be found there, and the nipples provide access to them so you can feed the offspring.

If you mean what is the purpose for nipples on male mammals...believe it or not, but we all start out as females. The nipples are there in case we do turn out to be female and need them to develop. Only the presence of male gonadotropic hormones stops them from developing into lactating breasts with mammary glands. But the nipples remain, regardless of gender.
