The use of metaphor and parables in religion is used to make the lame and easily coerced masses understand a broader and more complex theory, concept, notion or explanation. "As above so below" or "on earth as it is in heaven" comes to mind as in the "our father" prayer implying heaven on earth.

I hope I answer this right. Based on what I have learned, the bible uses a lot of metaphors in explaining the concept of faith. I am not familiar where specifically in the books of the catholic bible but somewhere there, faith was described as a mustard seed. As agriculture tells, a mustard seed is so small but when it grows, there's no stopping it. Like faith, it may start very small, with just an awkward moment but allows you to grow spiritually fruitful. Another description of faith was that it's like a candle, a single candle capable of illuminating an entire room. Like faith, I suppose, it is capable of lightening even the most dire circumstances.

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" - a metaphor for the Biblical admonition, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Not sure if that's what you're going for, but it's what comes to mind.

Bread and wine. But I cannot tell you why because I need to keep this information secret for my next book.
