That's 3rd grade? Wow, things have sure progressed since I was a kid!
Anyhoo, the way you solve this is with a little algebra (not sure your 3rd grader will understand this, but let's give it a shot):
Tree = x
Pot = x+2
Tree+Pot = x + x + 2 = 20
So, 2x + 2 = 20
2x = 18
x = 9
So, tree (x) = 9 lbs, and pot (x+2) = 11 lbs.

It weighs 9 pounds.
That's because, to put it in a thrid-graders terms, a pot weighs the same as the tree plus an extra two pounds. Therefore, you have to subtract 2 pounds from the overall of 20 lbs. That makes 18. Now, since both the pot and the tree should weigh the same, divide by 2 to find the weight of the tree: 9 lbs.

What two numbers = 20 and are 2 numbers apart? 10 and 10 are equal, so 11 and 9 are the only obvious numbers, 11 +9 = 20 and 11 is two greater than 9.

think algebra: if x is the weight of the tree then:
X + (X+2) = 20 lbs
so
2x + 2= 20
2X = 18
x = 9
the tree is 9 lbs
to check it, plug it back in 9 + (9+2) = 20, right?
there.
