So when they say democrats supported slavery they are absolutely wrong? Or are there just a select few conservatives who do not know history?

You are absolutely right on that account. And its quite possible 50 years from now allot of the platforms will be flopped around. Its certainly happened in the past.

You are partially right. Abe Lincoln was the first president to propose an income tax. However, by the time Herbert Hoover became president, The Republicans were more geared toward Industry and big business. They also would not support a SSI tax, minimum wage, health insurance, welfare, etc. When he was elected President, the Democrats were in shambles and were a mixture of anyone else that was not included in the Republican Party. When the Democrats won the Presidency, they won it because of the in action of the Republicans for the growing poverty, doing nothing about the stock market crash, bank closings, and the agricultural disasters that started in the early 20's. Hoover would make statements like 'let the churches take care of the poor' and accused any labor organizing as anarchist and communist. I believe that the Republicans dropped the ball with Civil Rights in the late 50's and that is why there are still a lot of minorities and lower income people that vote Democrat. It is interesting to note, that Black's that were registered voters until the early 60's were registered Republicans.

I believe that both parties have become more polarized. At least the Republicans have some moderates remaining. The Democrats last moderate (Joe Lieberman) was ran out of the party, so they have mostly left wing people. The democratic party was, at one time, a party with many views. Now, it seems to be so fragmented that it can not come up with one reasonable proposal on Iraq, immigration, stem cell research and many other issues. All they do is cast lies, half truths and aspersions at the Bush administration without any suggestions as to what to do.

The Republican party was always conservative and used to support lassaiz faire small government.

The democrats always had broad based support made up of southern democrats (conservative), northern democrats (liberals) and moderates and liberals from all over the country.

The Democrats (since Kennedy) have routed out the conservatives and most recently the moderates have mostly left the party. So neither side "switched" but both sides moved further left. The Democrats have changed, excluding their conservative foundation, and the Republicans have shifted more toward the center, bringing their conservative base with them.

Well, I wasn't around in those days, but I had some schooling a long time ago...

The type of democrat supported slavery today is much more relevant, and that is government sponsored welfare.

Great in a pinch, but will never get anyone out of poverty.

The reality is that for a large portion of our society, the social issues are reversed from monetary issues. So the person finds them selves torn between both parties.

They know history, they just don't want anyone else to. These people have been against: women's right to vote, black's right to vote, food for children programs, handicapped access, the abolition of slavery, the minimum wage, unions, child labor laws, it goes on and on. They call themselves "Compassionate Conservatives."

That's actually incorrect. No one believes in slavery anymore, so the idea that they have "swapped" is nonsensical. Good try though. LOL

The ideals of past are just that...the past. For both parties. They have not "swapped" they have changed, as people do.
