Well, some people enjoy labels. They help people get a hold of their identity. They're not for anyone, and I don't ever think we should start labeling others, only ourselves. And if someone doesn't want a label, that's awesome! Better for them! But until then, we live in a society that often puts a lot of stock into them, and I won't fault people who feel the need for one for themselves.
I agree that most labels we comes across are either too broad or too narrow. So 'lesbian' is too broad- there are all sorts of types, and people realized that they might be attracted to one type of lesbian, but not another. Hence butch and femme. But even now, that shuts it out to many who are somewhere in between, but not qutie the exact middle (androgyne). It's an inherent difficulty of labels that they do that- the minute you make a box, there's someone who wants to be outside of it while still using the label, and those who are in the box and wish to be outside of it.
Some think it should only be butch-femme; some think it should only be femme-femme, and, more rare, some think it should only be butch-butch. They use all sorts of excuses- the one I hear mostly is for femme-femme, saying "I like a woman to look like a woman" or "If I wanted someone who looked like a man, I'd be with a man", etc.. I agree; no one should be prescriptive with relationships, leastwise gays and lesbians, who are already criticized for loving who they love! I notice, though, that a lot of lesbians are being much more open- check out butch-femme.com, where, despite them being ardent lovers of the butch-femme dynamic, are very open and accepting of traditionally ridiculed/shameful couplings like butch/butch. They just shrug and say 'not for me, but cool'. It's very open and great.

THe reason behind the labelling is the same as in straight society, it just makes things easier to talk about if you have a shorthand term for common characteristics.
As for why people think it should only be stud&femme or whatever... meh, just cultural cliche.

Everything gets labeled many different things. As for your example, straight ppl may think it's always stud and femme or butch and fem, but quite often it's not.
Lol, Naveed, I love when ppl who know nothing about something like to tell ppl who do how it is... mixing gender issues with sexuality and thinking all gays/les were abused... wrong but whatever

I think that human beings are generally more comfortable if they can 'label' on another, but the labels change constantly (I've never heard the term 'stud' for a 'butch' lesbian, for example). I personally think they limit us in many ways, and few of us totally fit our assigned label. I try not to define myself by others perceptions.

the woman who are studs are people who have problems chemically in there brain, have a male brain....while the woman who are femmes have had some sort of emotional abuse as children from a male figure making them unable to trust men so they do the next best thing and find a woman with a man brain.....its the same for men except vice versa(you get it)
this answer probably won't be liked by many gay/lesbiens but think about it.....it's been proven that a person can have the brain makeup of the opposite sex.....and if you look at psychology woman who are abused by men typically have problems trusting men

It human nature to want to identify people to the most common denominator. Its also easier than actually understanding the complexities of the human relationship.

It's not only in the Gay community....it is freakin' everywhere!!! You have to be labeled as something, if you don't label yourself, someone else will!!! Are you democrat, liberal, republican? Gay Bi or straight? Goth, skater, jock, christian, buddhist, catholic....I mean.....what's the deal? I am none of the above.....I don't stand for any label 100%....and I refuse, especially when it comes to republican, liberal or democrat.....that is just insane!!!!!!

The heterosexuals are labeling us not us. I'm a lipstick lesbian, a femmie and I prefer my more tomboyish domestic partner. It's all about preference.
