About sixty percent of an average income goes for taxes when you add up sales tax, income tax, property tax, car tags, gas tax, cigarette tax, liquor tax, and state taxes. Not only that now they charge sales tax on pretax-ed items such as cigarettes, and liquor.

If there was not taxation how would you pay for public goods? For example, would you wanna grab change each time you drive on a different for a toll. Would you wanna be on the phone for 20 minutes finding the cheapest fire department its common sense here. That is local taxes there, and income tax are needed to fund education, health care, social security. If America did not have income taxes it look like South of the Border. Well, Flat tax on income be the best way to collect taxes like a 15% flat tax rate only the poorest 5% of income earners be exempt . I'm for lower taxes for all taxpayers, but I'm also one to be ruthless against any tax evader with a more transparent and fair system. Paying taxes is a civic responsibility for all. Public goods from tax dollars are needed for defense, police, fire, schools. Privatization of all services creates dead-weight in the economy too. Simplify the tax system and more money rolls in ask Russia about that one lol.

What is clear is that most people do not realize that they are their government. Have you ever voted or joined your party for nominations? Have you ever called your Senator and asked him what the hell. Have you ever figured out who would pay for the road you go to work or school on? Do you even know who's picture is on the 50 dollar bill? Do you know what tax was raised or lowered last on you? Do you know the reason you were taxed. Did you try to stop the tax. Was the guy you put into office by voting or donating your money or time, responsible for this new tax? You are the government.....don't be a sleeping member...either stop the taxes, or add more taxes.....don't be a whiner about the government.

How exactly is the US federal income tax illegal?

Congress imposed an income tax during World War I to pay for the war - after the war, they made it permanent, since a greatly expanded government required more funding. Congress has the constitutional authority to levy taxes. Where's the illegality?

Have you read the constitution? Amendment XVI says that

"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration"

So clearly, whether you like it or not, it is perfectly legal to tax incomes.

a lot of people that agree with you are in jail for tax evasion!
with that said, until WWI the USA collected all the tax monies they need from Import/export taxes, tobacco and other "sin" taxes.
what we need is less government, less welfare payments, less hand outs to other nations!

The constitution was amended in 1913 to make it legal. If you do not want to abide by the US constitution you will have to find some other country to live in.
