You can't go wrong with an infusion made from nettles (Urtica sp.) and raspberry leaf. It is a nourishing tonic and good for the whole family. I give it to my kids with honey. They like it either cold or hot. To make the infusion, we put a handful of cut/dried nettles and a handful of cut/dried raspberry leaf into a quart (or liter) jar, pour boiling water over it, cover, and let cool to room temperature. Refrigerate and it will keep for 2 days. We use 8 oz (250 ml) servings for adults and scale that down for children based on age and size (something like half that for a 50 lb child; and 1/4 that for a 25 lb child). If the kids do get sick, you can always add red clover (great for sore throats) and mint to the mix.
If you want to look at a book which deals specifically with the use of herbs for children, I can recommend "An Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants by Mary Bove, N.D.

Try a great product called "Juice Plus". It is a regimine of kid flavored vitamins that look like gummy bears.

The entire Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes uses them.

I give them to our 4, 7, and 10 year old girls.
