Its not very accurate. Every other mom I have talked to said their doc was off. I was told my daughter would have been about 6lbs. Well, she was 2 weeks early, and weighed 7lbs 3oz. In the last couple of weeks, they gain a pound a week, so had she gone full term, she would have been over 9lbs. BIG difference from six!

Neither method is very accurate. Ultrasounds can measure bone length, & head circumference to give a good estimate, but it can't see how much body fat is on the baby. Ultrasounds can be off by 2 pounds, plus or minus, and I can't imagine feeling your belly would be any more accurate.

NO, I had no ultrasound (just one at 5weeks and one at 7weeks), and none after that because I was perfectly healthy! And, I had a 9lb 10oz baby- shocked the doctors even! My doctor told me from all the tests and measurements, they thought I was going to have a normal size baby. He said prenatal vitamins these days are wonders compared to back in the day. So I say have it done by ultrasound... he said next time, they will do an ultrasound at 36 weeks to see where to go from there. I was 41 weeks exactly when I had my son, so one week overdue.

It's not that accurate. My doc said my girl would be 5- 5 1/2 lbs and she was almost 7.
Even with ultrasound it's just a guess. Could be a lb lighter or heavier than what they say.

well they measure the belly that gives an estimation of how long / big the baby might be, but yeah an ultrasound is the better route!

A skilled person using their hands is more accurate than an ultrasound. Either way it is more art than science though.
