No, there isn't a shortcut, and once you do a lot of those problems, it gets ingrained into your head and they're much quicker to do. Subtract the x's and square them, subtract the y's and square them, add the two results and find the square root. You ought to just know it, because you'll use it in just about every single math class that you take from here forward.

D = sqrt[ (x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2 ]

It's just the Pythagorean theorem in a coordinate plane after taking the square root of both sides of the equation.

um... i don't know what you mean, but the one i'm most sure of is velocity x time = distance
