ACTUALLY, iluvdavidk is very correct, but they decided to change to pumpkins when they moved to America. That was only because America doesn't have many tulips.

They choose to light it because it's said to "scare the ghosts/spirits away".

The use of pumpkins at Halloween dates back to the Celtic age ... the Celts believed that placing a jack-o-lantern on the doorstep or window sill kept the evil spirits away...but invited the spirits of thier loving departed family members back on Hallows Eve.

the ancient Celts used potatoes, but when they came to America they found pumpkins growing here and voila!

because they are easier to carve than watermelons. ;) Actually they started out tas TURNIPS but then they decided bigger was better i guesse
