But was he really the best rider on the field this past season? And did he really pull it together when he needed to or did he get lucky with Rossi's misfortune?

last sunday nicky was really lucky. if rossi didn't slip away i don't think nicky would get the world title. this past season he wasn't the best rider though he was the most constant. his teammate dani pedrosa was better than him. if dani didn't get knee injured in sepang, i think last sunday gonna be the fight between dani and rossi, or rossi, dani and nicky. not rossi and nicky.

To say that Nicky Hayden only won the World Championship because of Rossi's misfortune may be correct. But thats racing! ... Capirossi was also able to win the title this year... but would you say that Hayden took advantage of Capirossis disadvantage of the crash at Catalunya?
If Rossi HAD won the world championship, all the Hayden fans would have blame Nicky's obvious setback at Estoril.
Either way, the winner of the championship would've taken advantage of the others hard luck.
IMO, both riders had their setbacks, Nicky fought clutch problems, Pedrosa's elimination of him, HRC's favouritism and having to develop the EVO bike all through the season. Valentino had difficulty with the chassis vibrations, being mowed over by Elias and his broken wrist and foot.... in the end one riders luck outweighed the others, but like I said before, thats racing!

He was very consistent this season. He definitely had speed, not the same as Rossi though... Kudos to Repsol Honda for providing him with such a quality bike this season. Both he and Rossi benefited one way or another from each others misfortunes this season, Hayden just got luckier!!!!

well, it's racing..anything can happen. He might not be the best but he has a good machine under him..To win a race,it's all depend on the machine and their luck. Rossi has a good machine and talents but he wasn't lucky enough, and might be in pressure that lead to his misfortune.

that's why i love moto sport, anything can happen..either it's good or bad :)
