The doctor guesses based on feeling your belly and how long the baby is and how far along you are. It has nothing to do with how much weight you have gained.

They can't weight your baby while you are carrying it inside you. They can only guess how much your baby will weigh. My sister was told she was having a 9 pound baby and ended up having a 7 pound baby.

Usually they measure the baby, like the head, chest, etc. and make an estimate based on the measurements. But they can be off by a pound or more.

In most cases the doctor will give you a few ultra sounds during your pregnancy. this gives them a good Idea of how fast the baby is growing and whether or not the baby is large or small for its age. They also measure the size of your uterus to configure the baby's height and weight.

Ditto to JoAnne's answer. Also in a ultrasound, they go by the measurements of the baby to estimate weight.

They don't it is an estimate with my last one I was told he would be close to 7 lbs and that was 2 days before he was born and he was 9 lbs 9 oz. They guess that is about it...good luck

They base an "estimate" of your child's weight from the measurements they take via ultrasound and by measuring your uterus with their hands, etc

They can't.
They can make a guess based on your fundal height, feeling baby through your belly, how much weight you have gained and measurements taken via ultrasound.
But that's all it is.....a guess.
