WD-40 was invented in 1953.
According to the company that makes WD-40: WD-40 literally stands for water displacement 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who helped develop WD-40 back in 1953. Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion, a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula for WD-40 on his 40th try.

Water Displacement.
The company that makes the product - The WD40 Company - wanted a product that would take the place of water (remove it from an area). They tried numerous formulas and gave each formula a number. You already know which number formula displaced water the best.
Voila! Water Displacement test number 40 won.

Fenx is right. The scientists working on the formula got it right on the 40th try. And my understanding is that is was intended for being a metal preservative on heavy equipment like airplanes; they found it worked great as a lubricant and a million other uses, so they marketed it as such for the consumer market.
