I saw the same special that sweetie saw...it started around 3,000 years ago in Ireland by the Celtic people and was centered around harvest rites and they chose the last day of the harvest called Samhain or pronounced Sow-ain...the Romans incorporated some of the rites when they invaded the Isles and they intermingled and mixed...and later on with the advent of Christianity instead of trying to stamp out the holiday they too blended the customs together...
Then it came to America with the influx of Irish immigrants and was expanded upon during Victorian times...
It became more of a holiday for children until recently when more and more adults started getting in on the fun...a very very very truncated version whewwwwww LOL

It is an ancient Celtic holiday when it is said that the dead would haunt the earth. People dressed up to scare off the bad spirits. Christians later morphed it to their holiday, All Saints Day, by making it All Hallows Eve. This later became Halloween
Trick or treating was started when the poor would beg at the houses for rich. In exchange for food and/or money, the beggars would pray for their rich benefactors, However, if they were denied food and/or money, the beggars would curse them
