Garter's will always eat earthworms & you can always get these at any bait shop or dig your own if you live in a warm climate.

I think they eat frogs and bugs. One thing you might consider is that your garter snake is really against the idea of being kept as a pet. He will not show any emotion, nor will he understand any emotion directed at him.

well- they do manage to feed themselves when left alone in their natural environments-however-since you decided to step in-a 4" garter could eat guppies, and small earthworms just fine-if it is refusing food it may be sick or stressed-reptiles need uv light as well as heat in their environment in order to survive-and cool spots too-and places to hide-all of it kept clean-snakes can be kept successfully in captivity but it takes true dedication and responsibility-if your snake is sick it may need a vet to prescribe antibiotics-that can get expensive-if you decide to release your snake-wait till late spring or early summer so that it has time to establish a den-site for winter.

start with redworms u can buy at a local bait shop or catch your own, try ceickets, slugs(small) or a water bowl with tiny minnows. then buy a book or go to kingsnake.com for care sheet.

When I had one I fed it tadpoles. It wants live food so earthworms and maybe crickets should be OK too.

Small earthworms or small crickets, meal worms could work too
