An alternative operating system for PC's, used instead of Windows.

It's most unique defining feature is that it is open source, so anyone can produce their own version of linux or applications for it. As a result, there are numerous versions of linux, some commercial, many others free. It is widely used to run servers and similar systems and is in growing use in the home market as well.

Linix is an open source Operating system like windowsLike windows, Linux is a Graphical user interface (GUI) and Unix is a Character User Interface (CUI) like DOS. But we have rich set of commands in unix. We can write script programs using unix commands which will be more effective than the batch programs in DOS.
An Operating System, or OS, is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer Operating System, a computer would be useless.
UNIX

Unix, which is not an acronym, was developed by some of the members of the Multics team at the bell labs starting in the late 1960's by many of the same people who helped create the C programming language. The UNIX today, however, is not just the work of a couple of programmers. Many other organizations, institutes and various other individuals contributed significant additions to the system we now know today.

Linux

Developed by Linus Torvalds and further elaborated by a number of developers throughout the world, Linux (lee'nuhks/ or /li'nuks/,_not_/li:'nuhks) is a freely available multitasking and multiuser operating system. From the outset, Linux was placed under General Public License (GPL). The system can be distributed, used and expanded free of charge. In this way, developers have access to all the source codes, thus being able to integrate new functions easily or to find and eliminate programming bugs quickly. Thereby drivers for new adapters (SCSI controller, graphics cards, etc.) can be integrated very rapidly

Linux is an operating system, like Windows, Mac OS, OS2 and UNIX. It's generally a friendlier, more desktop-oriented variation of Unix. It's high on security and stability but not quite as user-friendly as Windows/Mac yet. Linux is not made by a company, rather it originally was made by a dude, Linus Torvald, and given away for free. Also, unlike Windows, the programming code for it is public (Open-Source) so anyone can see exactly how it works, and can modify it. Consequently, there are now about a zillion different 'flavors,' of Linux (called distributions) that different people have created or personalized. Since there isn't much of a profit to be made from Linux, there isn't one large company trying to improve it or make it more appealing. I think that's why Linux has pretty much stayed the OS of choice for hackers and serious computer nerds but not ordinary people.

it is an open source os that is supposed to be as good as windows. I have run it once and all I got was a severe headache. It is complicated and is nothing like windows. So if you want to just learn a new computer os this will definitly be a challenge. Try UBUNTU or the Linux XP both of which can be found for like $5.00 on ebay. Or I have them you can just have.

Another type of operating system... looks like what Windows is doing with their next operating system (Vista). First, they rip off Firefox to try and get more popularity for their internet browser... NOW they're ripping off Linux for their operating system. It seems Bill Gates really was the brains at Microsoft... too bad he's not coming back to his last role there.
