this heat pump is about 8 years old and we have not had any problems with it in the past but I do not know that much about heat pumps and I am afraid this is going to get expensive.

The reversing valve is inoperable. It requires a constant electric charge to remain in the "cooling" mode, otherwise it will "heat". Call a service technician. The most expensive part will be his labor.

No way to know without looking ata it I'm afraid. A service call with an estimate should not be too expensive. Heck, might be nothing more than a fuse or a contactor. You can't know until you have a professional diagnose it. Good luck though :)

Most likeely it is the solenoid coil on the reversing valve,it could also be the defrost control board. It may also be astuck relay on your electric resistance heat or a shorted control wire.Anyway you are going to need aservice call.
