If it's like the majority of PC's , you probably have it sitting on the floor. The cooling fan acts like a vacuum cleaner after awhile. If this symptom just started, go to the store, buy some canned air, go outside and blow out all the dust and dirt that's been collecting on the cpu cooling fins for years. Also blow out the power supply. I've brought a number of my friends' computers back to life this way :)

This could be one of several problems. You will have to eliminate each separately until you find the problem.
Power Supply is overheating. This could be due to too many additional devices you have in the PC, too much dust on the fan, or the PSU is dying. One way to tell if the PSU is not working correctly, the fan is not spinning.
CPU is overheating. This could be the Fan on the CPU is not spinning (again due to dust), or the bearings on the CPU fan are wearing and not spinning fast enough, or the CPU is dying.
A Virus. Some viruses are designed to shut down Window OSes. You will have to do a virus scan to confirm or to disprove this problem.
Bad Sectors. This is where the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is actually dying. Bad Sectors no longer hold the data it once had, especially if it in the Boot Sector. To determine if this is the problem, check to see if the HDD is making unusual noises or squeals, or go to the website for the company that made the HDD (Western Digital, Seagate, etc) that is in your PC.
Dust is one of the biggest factor of PC's dying before their time. Once a month, the case should be opened to blow out accumulated dust. If your PC is still under warranty, call the PC company for your computer to find out who is to do internal maintenance for your PC (such as removing dust inside).

I had a computer once that did that to me and it was a nasty virus. I'm not sure though that is your problem. If it wil stay on long enough I would try a full anti-virus scan first though..good luck
