I always heard the story that the PA was playing it during a game and it got such a good reception, they brought it back during the next game. Stephen King wrote about it (and Dirty Water) in Faithful, his accounting of the 2004 season.

I live in DC and when the Sox come to Baltimore, we sing it in the middle of the eighth with all the other hub fans, no matter what else is going on in the park.
