i would get a cheap acoustic guitar. It will hurt your fingers more but you will learn that if you can play an acoustic guitar then an electric comes easy when you start playing one. i wouldnt invest much though, i would just go to a pawn shop and get a used one or something. you can get a decent starter guitar for around 100 bucks. the other thing is if you get an acoustic you dont have to worry with getting an amp or cables and all of that mess. good luck with learning to play!!!

Well, considering you like Guns n' Roses, I say buy a decent Epiphone Les Paul and a Marshall MG 15 - 30 watt amp. That's a pretty nice combo for a beginner, and youl have the stuff that Slash has! But definantly, I would recomend an epiphone Les Paul and a 15 - 30 watt Marshall MG. As far as advice goes, think of guitar as a way to express emotions, not that 20 min you have to spend on scales everyday. When you practice, just have fun and enjoy it, otherwise it won't be fun in the long run. Also, don't just learn tab. You need some music theory.Look around the interent and learn your open chords, bar chords, major scales, minor scales, and blues scales (minor penatonic). If you learn those things instead of just using tab, you'll develop a good ear and understand the guitar. Good luck! Rock on!

The best guitar for a beginner is a cheap one, in case you decide later you really don't want to learn guitar. Go for a 6-string acoustic with nylon strings (steel strings hurt your fingers too much). If you pursue it and become good at it, put your old guitar in a yard sale and step up to something more sophisticated. Make sense? I thought so too.

I think the best guitar of a beginner is the one that isn't yours. Borrow one, try it out... unless you already know that you are going to stick with it.

i started with my brother's cheap-o guitar, i found out that i wanted to be a guitarist for the rest of my life, so my first guitar is a Fender acoustic with pick-ups.. it's was like $650(Canadian) with a case. It's easy to buy an expensive guitar when you know your gonna stick with it, i would only stop playing guitar if i physically couldn't play one. i currently own 6 guitars now. I'm also a drummer, but that's beside the point.

If you must get a guitar, figure out what and where you want to play, if you play late at night in your house, you'll need an electric, because an un-amped electric can be your parent's, roommate's, girlfriend/boyfriend's, next door neighbor's best friend because it's quiet. A steal string acoustic is a bit tricky to play quietly, more so than the nylon.
but what do you want to play? there is a big difference in style between the nylon and steal stringed. a lot of people are tricked by the nylon because it's easier to press the stings but they overlook that the fret-board is wider. As for the 12-string? well.... good luck finding one in your price range, but even if you did, i would advise that you definitely NOT go for a 12 string.

so if you need to keep volume down from time to time? go electric
for brands? there are a lot of quality low-end electric guitars by: Slammer, Berhinger, Washburn, Epiphone, Ibanez. (you want quality because having a guitar that slips out of tune constantly can really hurt a person's chances of sticking with it)

don't get me wrong, these companies make some starter guitars, but most of them have very good high-end guitars as well (i own 4 Epiphone guitars, out of my 6)

cheap? check eBay, local pawn shops normally have some, though be CAREFUL! because some pawn shops don't care about your learning and will sell you a piece of junk.

the best bet of everything, is ask someone you know who plays guitar to help you out, chances are if they are willing to help you pick one out, then they have one you could try ;)

well enough of my rambles, if you need any more information or want me to explain something in fuller detail, feel free to E-mail me at Supersonic_Fox@yahoo.com

I'll try and help out,

cheers,
-Kwan

Go to wal-mart, buy a 80$ guitar with a 50$ amp, a guitar pick and a tuner. Play and Play and Play and Play, Practice and Practice. Don't worry about having a great guitar, get a cheap one and get good. Alot of people give up playing the first few months, if you do then you didnt waste lots of money. Then a year later, buy something more to your style. However i do suggest starting on an electric because they are easier to play.

well you asked the correct person. you wouldnt base your guitar off of what strings you get, because you are supposed to change them every month. what you would want to ask is acoustic (guitar with hole in the middle, no elctricity) or electric. i would say acoustic. it will hurt your fingers more, but if you dont like playing the guitar, then you dont have to worry about all the 1000s of dolars you spent on getting an electric with all the cables, amps exe. you might want to check out "musicicansfriend.com" or "guitarcenter.com" pick what you want, not what people tell you. ROCK ON BROTHER!!!

find someone you know who wanted to play guitar a year ago, cause they will sell you their guitar. Most people quit after a few months. Look in the paper. Ask a guitar player friend to look for you.
