Dress up like a scare-crow and be sure to have some kind of a mask that covers your whole head or a mask and a hat.
Lay down in a pile of leaves in the yard, cover yourself up a bit like you've been knocked over and laying there a few days.
When the kids get close, jump up and yell "Trick or Treat" or "Happy Halloween", or whatever.
You could also hide in a clean trash can and do about the same thing.

Carve a really scary pumpkin and drop some dry ice in it then put in some hot water... the dry ice will create a fog that is really cool! Just be careful to handle the dry ice properly so nobody gets hurt!

I remember this one house we would go to when I was a kid. They had a ghost rigged to a tree somehow and when we would walk through they would let the ghost fly down. It would scare the crap out of us. More than likely they just had it attached to a rope with someone watching for kids and holding the other end of the rope. It is funny now but I remember I never wanted to go to that house when I was a kid!

Dress up in old clothes like a scare crow or just a scary dumby and sit beside your step or porch half sitting half laying in the chair and just make a very subtle move when the kids get close. Such as moving your legs or an arm.Can be very funny.

If you have a speaker & microphone...stick the speaker outside in a pumpkin or better yet a creepy looking doll & say hi to the kids when they get close.

wait for kids to come bye [Not to little though]
jump out right after they say 'Trick or'.
My neighbor does it every year and it still scares me XP

I like the Table with a large tablecloth on it..with the bowl of candy sitting in the middle with a sign that says..take just one and when they start heading for the table...someones head pops out of the table.

just take old clothing stuff them with leaves,lay them outside make sure you are out there too laying down of course when people walk by grab them or jump up at them it will scare the crap out of them it worked for me last year good luck

Before you open the door have you and someone else crying like your terrified.Open the door and hide behind it ....sobbing like something is mortally wrong.Then have someone else come up to the kids with a "weapon" and say,
"Shut up.Now don't make me do it .I swear to GOD I "LL DO IT! I 'll give this candy if you dare say trick or treat....."
And thats all I got
