It can be done but it's not worth it because it's such a long trip. You're much better off to fly as it is much quicker and Sydney and Brisbane airports are not too far from the city. Qantas, Virgin Blue and JetStar all have pretty competitive rates for that route (which is one of the countries busiest) and long distance trains are actually not cheap in Oz.

Hi

I have to agree with aflumpire's answer above.

I thought it was a great idea to travel from Sydney to Brisbane by train so I did it a few years ago. My train left Sydney late afternoon and arrived in Brisbane early the next morning. I thought it would be a cheap way to travel (50% discount on an ISIC card) and save me a night of accommodation.....

IT WAS ONE OF THE WORST NIGHTS OF MY LIFE!

The train was old, uncomfortable and very loud. And slow. The food was no good. And the poeople around me were loud and annoying. My girlfriend, who was travelling with me, hated it even more tham me.

I would not recommend it.

DONT DO IT! 2 people I know did it and they both HATED IT!

Fly (Qantas or Virgin Blue $110 AUD)

Drive (Takes an overnight trip)

Bus (Greyhound is good so I have herd. Takes longer than by car)

Flying is the easyest option if you were going by train. $100 takes 1 hour, simple!

Just dont do the train, thats all I can say

I agree.. don't do it! Unless you want to pay for a sleeper cabin, in which case why not just fly.. it takes about 1.5 hours and costs as cheap as $200 return.
