I have a 351M in my 1977 Ford F-150 4x4. Will it work to put a 400 from a 1979 2 wheel drive, in my truck? They both have the C-6 Transmission and i looked at both of them and from my view it looks like they will work and bolt up but im not sure about the oil pan on the 400. please if anyone has any suggestions or ideas please let me know. Thanx

351M and 400 have the same block. They are identical except for the stroke on the crank. Good luck.

These guys are right, - but check the clearance on the oil pan, it may work as is! Since the depth of the pans are different, you will have to change the oil pump setup too (at least the pickup part)!...These are both "small block "engines, so the transmission should be the same! Your biggest problem is going to be the exhaust pipe hookups, the heads are a little diferent, and the manifolds may have a clearence problem with the origional exhaust pipes, (or crossover pipe). Your exhaust manifolds form the old one may fit, but the pipes will be different width, or angle if they do! So you may have to do a mix and match setup, and then have pipes made to match up to the manifolds when you get done! The main thing here is to make sure that the manifold "flange" for the pipe doesn't come out directly into the frame or some accessory!

When you are done you will barely notice any difference in power or gas consumption!

should bolt right up but,you may have to change mounts(sometimes they are different) depending on which plants they were produced in.you will also need to change the oil pans,if theres a difference(those years you speak of had american and canada counter-parts which had differences even though they are the same thing)question is;Why the hell would you swap out the 351m for a 400?they are basically the same motor but,the 351m is by far the better of the two.

It will fit, oil pan is smaller in the 2 wheel drive.

SWAP OIL PANS AND PICKUP TUBE MANIFOLDS MIGHT ALSO BE DIFF.
