check out these bands
the strokes
green day (preferably the old stuff, like off dookie and insomnia)
the presidents of the united states of america (very funny 90s band)
u2
Muse (freakin awesome band)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (you really can't go wrong with these guys, they're possibly the best band ever)
some of The Offspring's music is ok
the best advice i can give you is to find whatever music u like best and enjoy that. don't try to listen to what everybody else listens to. be yourself. you'll have more fun with music if you're listening to what you like than if you're listening to what everyone else likes.

Go to Yahoo music and see what is on the top 100 and use some of those. You can also look at lyrics sites that have top requests for lyrics. Different sites have top songs.
