I am interested in knowing about characters in different mythologies that can change THEIR OWN shape to whatever they want to be. I am not looking for those who can change the shape or form of others. In Hindu mythology, Maricha can change his own form and took the form a golden deer when he was killed. Appreciate the help of Yahoo Answer's global audience. Thanks.

Shapshifters exist throughout many cultures, there are the silkies in Ireland-seals the assume human form and if you keep there hide you hold their heart until they find it. Native Americans believed warriors and shamans could shapeshift into animals to protect their tribes (note: this power was severely diminished by the arrival of missionaries who "educated" the population and lowered it to lore). Greek myths tell of the gods assuming every shape imaginable including rain, wind and earth items. You would have to find a searchable text for every source, It took me years to study over 300 texts and although I will give you hints I would be remiss to give you direct answers. Good Luck!

It is known that ancient peoples (in most cultures) who have been through the lore of those cultures have abilites to do things beyond some peoples understanding. It is believed people in Indian and Aboriginal cultures of the world did and still do shape shift.
