chromosomes are made up of DNA which wraps tightly around histone proteins making them visable. A gene is a region of DNA that determines the amino acid sequence of a protein (the coding sequence) and the surrounding sequence that controls when and where the protein will be produced (the regulatory sequence).

Chromosomes are made up of genes that are made up of DNA.

That is very simple but it is basically the way it works.

You have DNA which is made up of coding regions that code for specific proteins etc... These coding sections are genes. Large sections of many genes make up a chromosome. (Which is basically a long section of DNA wrapped around a little ball (Histone).

DNA is made of nucleotides. genes are found in a small percentage of DNA (that is your blueprint). Chromatin is made of DNA and porteins in the nucleus (the big control center) of a eukarotic cell(what you, me, plants, ameobas and animals are made of). when mitosis occurs (cell splitting in 2), the chromatin coils up into chromosomes, and then the chromasomes split in two and go to the opposite sides of the cell and the cell splits.
