Peppermint! Go to a cooking store or health food store. Find some peppermint oil. It comes in a very small bottle. Be careful with this stuff! It's very potent in oil form and is not to be injested! Put a few drops in a spray bottle with water. Go all around the house spraying it in the corners of every room or where you see most of the spiders. They will never come back! The residue will last about 2 or 3 months, then do it again. This works on all kinds of bugs.

I usually step on them with a shoe. I dont recommend barefoot as the spiders squoosheeness might gross you out, leading to a feinting spell in which you could end up collapsing in the web of the very spider you laid to rest. And that would be doublesquooshees. So, don't go barefoot, use a shoe. If you want to see something pretty cool though, put the deceased arachnid in your fish bowl/tank and see what the fish do to it. Your kids might like this too, especially if they are boys. I saw a lizard eat a spider once, and that was pretty cool....

When you see the spider, quickly put a cup or glass over it, then go get a piece of paper and slide it under the opening of the glass (the spider will be caught in the glass now) and go put the spider outside. I seem sarcastic, but I'm serious. Spiders are good to have around, and it's good luck to rescue a spider.

Seal up cracks and cut their food supply off.... No bugs, no spiders.
Disrupt their way of life... clean and vacuum the corners (ceiling too) of your home.
Make your home not spider friendly and they will go and not come back.
Make sure you get the egg sacs in the corners and crevices of your home.
