I heard it argued both ways, so I thought I would ask the experts in Yahoo. One person claims that without any athletes, it can not be called sport and should be relegated to sports entertainment. The second person argues that there is a championship at the end, like most sports have. Who is right?

There are 3 levels of sports.
The first is recreational. This is Horse shoes, ping pong, fishing ect.
The next is competition. This includes recreational,Racing, auto horses ect.
Then there are the physical sports.Football, basketball, baseball ect.
Now purest will call sports any of the events that take place in the olympics,Which would elemenate any of the above.
So you could say sports is any recreational, competition or physical activity for enjoyment.

It is and has always been a sport. Whether it remains that is up to the France family. The "chase" is a good example of unnecessary meddling for "entertainment" purposes. I predict that Nascar will continue to tamper with what they've got in order to try and maintain their growth. It will become less sport and more entertainment. 20 years from now, Nascar will probably resemble the cheesy TV cartoon they had out for a while. Maybe they'll solve a mystery or something during the course of each race to keep people tuned in.

for starters, there ARE atheletes, great ones. a NASCAR driver can lose 10 pounds during a 500 mile race. it takes great stamina, endurance, and lightning quick reflexes, all trademarks of great atheletes. NASCAR drivers are the last of the gladiators, they put their lives on the line every time they strap themselves into their cars.

and that's not to mention the pit crew members. most of these guys are former college football players, they are also top notch atheletes. they change 4 tires, add 22 gallons of fuel(the old fashion way, with big heavy gas cans, no electronic pumps like F1), and make adjustments to the cars such as pulling spring rubbers out of the springs underneath the cars, all in 13-15 seconds. an eye popping, amazing feat that these guys make look routine, because they train hard and practice their craft all week long, just as any other atheletes would. these guys don't just 'show up' on sunday to do their jobs, they are full time atheletes.

earnest hemingway said it best: "there are only 3 sports, mountain climbing, bull fighting, and auto racing. all the rest are merely games."

These days, there's no sport involved in NASCAR, so it's not really appropriate to call it either one.
