When I first arrived at college, just about every female gave me the go to hell look. I did not do anything to them, but they kept mean mugging me. I did not have body odor or anything stuck in my teeth. I dress in tee shirt and jeans, and I did not do anything mean to them. Why are they doing this?

As soon as more people get to know you, you can develop a positive reputation no matter what people's first impression was. So find out who has similar interests and follow up on that to start meeting new friends. If you feel so awkward that you want to resolve your question first, why not ask one or two of them? Just say I'm sorry but can I ask your advice about something personal? I was worried I may have come across offensively because I felt I was getting negative reactions or weird looks from several women students. etc. Maybe some of them will tell you, or will ask around for you.

I never met anyone who was offended by being asked advice. Most people take it as a compliment that you would trust their opinion. So this may be a harmless approach to find out if something really is wrong. It may be you look like someone else who has been giving people trouble, and they don't know if you are related. But again, once people get to know you for who you are, any mistaken assumption can be straightened out over time.

We forget when we're just starting college that so are all the other freshmen. They're just as nervous, scared, confused, and desperate to fit in and make friends as you are. There could be more to it than that (I don't know what you look like, how you look at them, how you approach them, etc.), but the fact is, it's hard to pretend to be at ease in a new setting, and even harder to think about being nice when you're so busy trying to keep your own head above water. Give them time to get used to college and in the meantime thrill them with your own complete self-possession, thoughtfulness, and unique personality.

Because they are a**holes. Don't worry about it though, they will change and they will realize you might just be the best friend they have ever had.

It's a woman's nature to be territorial. Give yourself time. Let them get to know you.
